The lake was called Dawson after John Dawson (1839-1917) before taking the name McIntosh. Dawson joined the Chicago-Colorado Colony in 1871, and farmed east of Hygiene. In 2003, the City leased the surface rights to the lake with the intention of creating a district park which will link Dawson Park, Flanders Park and Boulder County's Lohr Open Space. Through a public process, a master plan was developed and approved by Council in the fall of 2003. Phase I of development was completed in 2004. Work included access to the lake for non-motorized boating, parking off Harvard Street and a connecting pathway between Dawson & Flanders parks. Phase 2 completed in 2005 included the soft surface trail construction around the remainder of the lake. Phase 3 construction was completed in 2008 and enhances the habitat along the western and northern shorelines, added a restroom and some picnic facilities. Phase 4 will create a path connection across 17th Avenue/ Hygiene Road. Shoreline fishing is permitted along the shoreline only at Dawson and Flanders Parks, and from the dam on the south side of the lake.
